The M4 was introduced in 1966 as the natural successor to the M3 & M2 and essentially served as an incremental update. It did however outlive its own short-lived successor, the M5 and production continued through several variations until 1998.
In 1984 Leica launched the M6, based on the “classic” form factor of the M4 but made of lighter materials, it was also - apart from the light
meter - fully mechanical.
